Preface

These forward-thinking leaders laid the foundation
for new ways of creating tools and equipment to drive
business improvements and efficiency.
The resulting hardware and software industries have
produced innovative products and solution-based
applications that have gained global acceptance
by focusing on performance, efficiency, and user
experience, while scaling their capacities and by
targeting commercial businesses, governments, and
educational sectors.
The introduction of database and reporting tools
facilitated the capture and storage of large amounts
of data, as well as the presentation of that data in
meaningful and informative ways for analysis and
action-oriented decisions.

Soon after, the “killer-app” (as it was affectionately
referred to) appeared: the electronic mail (E-mail)
— a transformative innovation to improve business
communications at a lower cost.

The computing semiconductor and chip industry then
boomed, thanks to ground-breaking high-performance
chips and successful miniaturization over time. This led
to the game-changing breakthrough and introduction of
the Apple iPod and its “music in the pocket” as a portable
device followed; the iPad and software application (App)
platforms were then developed to create the new Apple
eco-system.

Parallel to these advances was the development of
a high-speed highway in the sky, the Internet. Then,
of course, it went mainstream and ushered in the
dot-com era, which was responsible for the Internet’s
