SESSION 5 : Song of Songs 2:1-7 (NIV)
The second part of this verse, again from the Passion Translation, talks
about her sitting under His grace-shadow and blossoming in His shade.
Notice that she is growing simply by basking in His presence; how we
all need to learn from this passage! If we will but give Him precedence
and yield to His Spirit, He will give us the grace to grow and mature.
Verses 4–6 provide a detailed explanation of the deepening intimacy
between the Shulamite and her Beloved Shepherd-King. Notice how
He suddenly opens up to her the delights of knowing Him. At her
behest, He leads her, and she doesn’t have to do anything but go and
abide with Him. In verse 6, I noticed that the ability to even move our
heads heavenward toward Him requires His support—hence it says,
“His left arm is under my head.”
Our God longs to shower us with a revelation of His goodness,
kindness, and love. He wants it more than we do. He is so eager to fill
us with Himself that at times it can even seem overwhelming. We need
to pray for the enlargement of our spirit to receive as much of Him as
is possible this side of eternity. Intense spiritual experiences such as
these leave one physically and spiritually exhausted, and this is why
our God then comes with gentleness to temper the fires of passion that
He has kindled within us. He ignites, He controls, and He subdues. As
the lover of our souls, He knows what we need.
