RADICAL LOVE
hearts toward God and man instead of crying out for grace to be like a
lily for Jesus.
I am reminded of an incident that occurred some years ago, which
appears to substantiate this claim.
I was on a prayer walk in London, and we came to pray around Hackney
Town Hall—where I, as an unbeliever, had gotten married for the
second time some years before. As I stood on the steps, I had an
experience that I will never forget. I felt the warm, loving presence of
the Lord all around me, as He reminded me that because of His love-
gift of salvation, I was no longer a rebellious and sinful woman, as was
the case in those days, but now a true Bride of Christ—spotless and
pure.
After a few moments of basking in this revelation, I noticed that there
was actually a wedding taking place, but none of us could pick out the
bride from the guests. At that instant, the Lord spoke to my heart and
said that this was the case of His Bride in many places. She was so
immersed in herself and the world, with its distractions and pleasures,
that nothing made her stand out from the crowd.
In other words, instead of living the set-apart, renewed, and restored
life which He had obtained for her on the cross—and allowing Him to
live in and through her—the Bride was resisting the Holy Spirit, and in
many instances looked no different from a thorn.
The great man of God, Luther, also warned us about this:
