RADICAL LOVE
ointments”—which is in the plural. This is because the name and
person of Jesus are multifaceted. He has to be in order to fulfill what
His name means, which is “God is my Saviour.” Everything needed for
the fullness of well-being—for our bodies, souls, and spirits—is found
only in the person and name of Jesus Christ.
As I was meditating on this verse, I was struck by how much it cost
Jesus to become that pleasing fragrance—the ointment, the ever-
flowing oil. It only came forth because of His willingness to suffer on
our behalf out of love. We, too, are called to join in the fellowship of
His suffering. The Bible says that it has been granted to us to suffer:
“For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe
in Him, but also to suffer for Him...” (Philippians 1:29, NIV)
We are also called to exude a pleasing fragrance to others:
“Now wherever we go, He uses us to tell others about the Lord and to
spread the Good News like a sweet perfume. Our lives are a fragrance
presented by Christ to God. But this fragrance is perceived differently
by those being saved and by those perishing. To those who are
perishing, we are a fearful smell of death and doom. But to those who
are being saved, we are a life-giving perfume.” —2 Corinthians 2:15
