CHAPTER 7

          T
he next day at school, I was sitting with Mark again. Clearly,

my best friends hadn’t really been talking to me. They’d been
whispering behind my back more than usual, and this time,

they weren’t even trying to be quiet. I could clearly hear them laughing
about random things—like someone’s mom being overly affectionate

in public—and, of course, Aria was right in the middle of it.

The teacher saw them and said, “Okay, girls at the back—that’s
enough. You can see I’m teaching, and you’re talking? And this is the

          second time.”
Madelyn, pretending to feel sorry, said, “We’re sorry.” But

          everyone knew she was lying.

               “No, you’re getting detention.”
               “What?!” Elisha said, shocked.

               “Now. Go.”
I could tell they weren’t happy about it, but… at least they filled

one thing on the list—getting detention.
When school closed, I was walking home when I heard a familiar

voice. I turned to see Mark running toward me.

“Oh, hey!” I said to him as he reached me.
“Hi, um… I was thinking, since clearly your parents didn’t pick

you up, maybe we could walk together?” He bent to his knees, panting
          for air.
