SO… THAT WAS FRIENDSHIP?
“Wait—you also live around here?” I stared straight at his house,
then at mine, which was at the corner.
“Um, yeah. You also do?”
“Yeah!”
“No way!” he chuckled softly.
“Mhm. I guess we have to go now.”
“Um, before we go, is it possible I can get your number?”
I rubbed my neck and turned away. “Oh.. um, I don’t know—”
“Oh, c’mon, I’d like to know you more. We could text or call?”
I froze for a second, not really expecting that. We’d only been
talking for two days, and I was still trying to figure him out—figure us
out, if there even was an us. But he didn’t sound pushy; still, there was
something in his voice that just sounded hopeful. I looked at him, trying
to read more than what he was saying. Part of me hesitated, but another
part didn’t want to keep pushing people away right now.
“Yeah… okay,” I said, unlocking my phone and typing the digits
into his. He smiled when he saw it pop up, and for some reason, that
made me smile too.
“’Kay, see you tomorrow!” he said, running to his house.
