SO… THAT WAS FRIENDSHIP?
Eliott stood too, his face red with anger. “And you’re just okay
with it? Just like that?” Without waiting for a response, he turned and
stormed out of the house.
Mom reached for me gently. “I’m so sorry,” she whispered through
tears.
I stepped back. “No. Don’t be sorry,” I said, wiping my face as
tears kept falling. “Because I already knew something like this was
coming. You’ve been distant for months. I knew you’d hurt us—I just
didn’t know it would hurt this much.”
I grabbed my bag and walked out, my chest aching, leaving behind
a house full of silence, cracks, and things we couldn’t fix.
When I reached school, I saw my friends at their lockers and ran
up to them.
“Um… what’s wrong?” Madelyn looked at me as if she had never
seen me before.
“I–I just had to listen to the weirdest decision ever.”
“What?” Elisha asked.
“My parents are having a divorce,” I said, about to drop more tears
from my reddish eyes again.
“Oh, really? Um…” Madelyn turned and rubbed her neck.
“What? Guys, I am shocked, sad, and worried! Who am I going to
stay with now?!”
Aria looked at me like I was exaggerating.
“Guys!” I said, looking at them, confused.
