THE COST OF BELONGING

“Gigi! This is the time to spend with your family, and you’re not
going to buy anything for school because you already have what you

          need,” Mom scolded me.

I stormed off to my room with an angry face.
Later on, Alexa came in and saw me on the computer.

She asked, “Uh, Gigi, what’re you doing?”
“I’m trying to find good shops to go to,” I said, busy typing on

          the computer.
“Why?” She came closer to see.

“Because we need to get those things for school, ya know?”

          “But your mom said no.”
“So? Look, if she really wants to make me happy at our new

school, then she should agree to let us get those things. And besides,
she’ll never know, because I won’t tell her—nor would you, right?”

“Uh, yeah, totally,” she muttered under her breath.
“Good. Now, let me try to find one shop… aha! I found one.”

               “Really? What’s it called?”

“School Supply Store—and it’s ten minutes from here.”
“Oh, so we can walk there.”

“Yeah! C’mon, we’re going now.” I got up, already wearing my

          shoes.
“Wait, we’re sneaking out?” she paused.

“Well, it’s not really sneaking out—it’s like… uh, look, we’re
fourteen now, it doesn’t really matter.”

               “What about your mom?”
