THE LIFE OF A TEENAGE GIRL

“Well, Dahlia, I guess your life as a sick person isn’t really great—
but that’s gonna change, because I promise it’s gonna be so fun!”

“I guess. But know, being sick doesn’t mean I can’t have some fun,

          okay?”
“Okay, okay, whatever. C’mon, let’s go get a permission form!”

At home, I gave the permission slip to my parents to sign, and they
weren’t exactly pleased to see it.

“What?” I asked, hoping they’d sign it.
“Honey, you’re going to the woods?” Mom said, still shocked.

               “Yeah, so?”

“Isn’t it too dangerous? I mean, it’s probably one of those woods
          with wild animals in it.”

“I know, Mom, but it’s fine. I’m gonna be fine. And besides, I

won’t be alone—almost the whole school is going. And if this is about
the enzyme problem, you shouldn’t be worried about it, because I—”

She interrupted me and said, “Okay, I get it! Just… promise me
you’re going to come back home safe and with no injuries?”

“Ugh, fine. Just sign it already!”
She and Dad signed the slip, and at last, I could finally have an

          experience worth calling my own.
