CHAPTER 9
T
oday was the day we were going to the woods, and I ran into
the crowd to find Mara. When I found her, she was talking to
her other friends.
I went closer to them and said, “Hey, guys.”
They turned to me and smiled.
“Hi. Are you actually ready for this?” Emily asked. She said it like
I wasn’t—and never was—ready for this.
“Yeah! Why ask?” I answered, confused. I mean, wasn’t it
obvious?
“Oh, nothing. I just thought your health problem was gonna affect
your—”
Lizzie elbowed Emily’s rib and whispered, “Shut up! That’s rude.”
“Look, guys, just because I’m sick doesn’t mean I won’t have fun
on this trip. I’ll be fine, so don’t worry like my parents do, okay?” I
declared.
We had only known each other for a day, and already my health
was turning into their favorite topic. It wasn’t like I was about to faint
in the middle of a trip, yet they spoke as if it were that serious. Why did
every fun moment have to circle back to me being sick? It was
annoying—and honestly, a little rude.
“Yeah! You heard her, guys,” Mara protested.
“You too, Mara,” I chuckled.
