SHAUNA’S STAND–UP
“Okay, class,” the teacher began, “today we’re starting our
Cultural Art project. By that, I mean creating art based on traditions—
where you come from, your heritage, your background.”
It looked and sounded pretty easy, but it wasn’t for me. Even
though I’m British and Irish, it was still hard to figure out how my
background was made from two countries—Britain and Ireland. It was
supposed to be about our culture and traditions, but I didn’t know much
about Ireland—maybe a little about Britain, since they teach us here—
but my parents wouldn’t even tell me a single thing about their country,
except the food.
“Hey,” the girl next to me whispered.
I turned to her. “Yeah?”
“Do you understand the art topic?”
“Uh, kind of. But I’m half British, half Irish, so I don’t know much
about traditions and cultures.”
“Oh my gosh, same!” she said, covering her mouth in shock.
“Wait, you’re Irish and British too?”
“No, I’m British, but my great-great-great-grandparents were even
in World War II.”
It kind of sounded like a joke, which gave me an idea.
“Oh wow. Well, I have a joke about it.”
“What is it?”
I know I barely knew this girl, but she looked cool—and okay to
tell my jokes to.
