Similarly with the Shulamite, her motive is never to show off or appear
superior, but to awaken in others joy, hope, encouragement, and the
passionate desire—symbolised by the spiced wine and nectar from her
pomegranates—to likewise follow the true Lover of their souls.
Consequently, what is happening in the innermost part of her being will
have to remain mostly hidden. The only people she can share these
experiences with are her Bridegroom and those “brides-to-be” who also
wish to pursue the same path of total surrender.
As I read the above verses, I sensed within the Shulamite a great
sadness and regret, which her Bridegroom-King understood
completely. For this reason, He drew her to Himself to console and
reassure her of His love and acceptance once again.
It is interesting to note that on this occasion, it is the Shulamite who
tells her friends not to disturb her in this season of separation unto her
Bridegroom King. Back in Chapters 2:7 and 3:5, it was the
Bridegroom-King who told the brides-to-be not to intrude upon her.
Now, however, she is adamant that nothing should come and interrupt
her time alone with Him. She has received the revelation that it is only
in Him and through Him alone that we live, move, and have our being.
And irrespective of the opinions of others, she refuses to be taken off
course until He has finished His work in her.
We have touched on this point earlier, but I feel it is necessary to remind
us once again that in order to be sufficiently equipped and strengthened
for future seasons in our lives, we must intentionally position ourselves
