The National White Collar Crime Center , in their course Introduction to Intelligence , describes six

applications of intelligence in law enforcement:
• Prevent and deter crime including terrorism
Strategic assessments, threat assessments, critical infrastructure protection
• Support investigations
Generate new leads, new directions, and highlights additional criminal activity
• Focus collection efforts
To determine the meaning of collected information
• Support prosecutions
To provide understandable explanations of criminal activity through analysis
• Provide support for decision-making
Strategic assessments used to target and allocate resources
• Guide allocation of personnel
Used to assist in the prioritization and assignment to specific cases
How is intelligence produced?
Intelligence is produced through the scientific method known as the Intelligence Cycle; wherein, there
are six distinct steps that must be completed for actionable intelligence to be disseminated. They are
(1) Planning and direction, (2) Collection, (3) Processing and collation, (4) Analysis, (5) Dissemination,
and (6) Re-evaluation .
