(1) Planning and direction is the beginning stage where there is an acknowledgement that problem
exists and intelligence is required to solve the issue through the most informed decision.
(2) Collection is the information gathering stage which can come from many sources, including, but
not limited to, interviews, case reports, open source, the media, etc.
(3) Processing/collation is where the IA begins to organize and evaluate the information received.
(4) Analysis doesn’t occur in a vacuum. In this stage, the intelligence product is reviewed, re-reviewed,
and changed when there is a constant flow of information.
(5) Dissemination occurs only when the relevant stake holders are identified. Once the product has
been produced, and written with the reader in mind, it can be targeted and distributed to a certain
group within the enforcement community (detectives, front line officers, command level).
(6) Re-evaluation happens as soon as the product is distributed. Anytime a critique of the intelligence
is reviewed, more information is gathered because of the intelligence, or whenever feedback is
obtained, the entire cycle must be re-evaluated for accuracy.
