Abstract This article presents the results of a study on the effect of air filter media on the
output of the Spark Ignition (SI). Before mixing phase with petrol in the carburetor, four types
of material: standard, paper, cotton, and foam, were examined as a filtering element in the air
filter box. In the test, in order to calculate engine output parameters, a single 4-stroke engine
had been attached with 20 kW dynamometer generators. The engine parameters that have been
calculated manually are the engine torque, engine power(B.P), thermal brake efficiency (BTE),
brake specific fuel consumption(BSFC), and brake mean effective pressure (BMEP) at
different engine speeds. The study shows a relation between motor efficiency and filtered air
characteristics depending on the type of air filter element. It indicates that the engine's lifespan
would be affected if the air filter element has not worked effectively.
