Reading is an interactive form of communication in which an author communi-
cates ideas to you and invites your response. How can you respond? One answer is
provided by the SQ3R reading strategy, which stands for Survey, Question, Read,
Recite, and Review. This technique requires that you interact with reading material by

Step 1: Survey
Surveying, the first stage in SQ3R, is the process of previewing, or pre-reading a book
before you study it. Compare surveying to looking at a map before a road trip; deter-
