Darul Ghufran Mosque

            Introduction

Darul Ghufran Mosque was opened on 7 December 1990,
with the official inauguration on 13 July 1991 (1 Muharram
1421H) by Hj Othman Harun Eusofe, Member of Parliament
for GRC Marine Parade. The mosque has a capacity to
accommodate 4,000 worshippers and stands three storeys
            tall.

In September 2016, the Blue Minaret was closed for extensive
upgrading works until March 2019, when it reopened
(Figure1) Madam President Halimah Yacob officially opened
the new mosque on 20 April 2019. It is currently Singapore’s Figure 1: Darul Ghufran Mosque.
largest mosque, which can hold 5,500 people and has a floor
            area of 5,910 square metres.

Our primary objective was to conduct an environmental
review of the mosque, identify environmental aspects, and
recommend eco-solutions to reduce associated carbon
            emissions.

The ESI team recognised from the outset that mosques rely
heavily on volunteers, predominantly retirees. Therefore,
the proposed eco-solution must be straightforward and,
if feasible, scalable for implementation in other similar
mosques and religious organisations across Singapore.

            Environmental Review

The ESI team conducted a site survey of the mosque on 16
            August 2022 (Figures 2 and 2).
