“Stand Up Against Hate” Contest
In February Father Scott learned of a statewide campaign to stand up against
hate. There was a youth competition to go along with the initiative. It was open to
all schools/youth groups throughout our state. We wanted to get our students
involved so we introduced the competition to students in grades 3-8th. Any
interested student could submit a hashtag or art work that gave their idea/support
for standing up against hate in NJ. We had multiple entries!
The state committees and task forces voted to find one STATE winner in each
category. We are very proud to announce that one of our St. Joseph Grade School
students has won the hashtag category. Congratulations to Michelina Roche for
being the statewide winner for her hashtag #NoHateInThisGreatState.
Mimi's hashtag will be on lawn signs, social media, and NJ Transit buses to name a few! Michelina
was presented her award at the school on April 28, 2021. She will also be recognized during a state virtual
zoom awards ceremony. Michelina was interviewed via
zoom, and we are so proud of her response. The
question was "Who has inspired you to share
your passion & vision for preventing
discrimination, bias and hate?"
Michelina’s response was:
"My parents have always
taught me to be kind to everyone.
If someone needs a friend, be
their friend. If someone needs
help then help them. It's ok to
stand up for what's right! I am
also a very faithful person. I
go to St. Joseph Grade School
where we are taught that we
are all children of God. All
people are beautiful
regardless of race, religion
or gender and we accept
everyone. I believe that
more families and schools
teaching these values will
help prevent discrimination
and hate."
Congratulations Mimi,
Great Job!
