But trying to derive lasting pleasure
and fulfillment from the activities and
things of the world can be compared to
taking a “drug” that temporarily gives
relief from either physical pain or
emotional instability, and then when the
effect of the drug wears off, it’s necessary
to take another dose — and sometimes
the dosage needs to be increased in order
to bring about the same relief, which can
sometimes lead to life-threatening
overdoses. In the same sense, a life lived
in search of fulfillment from the temporary
pleasures that the world has to offer can
be addictive and even destructive because
