9.0 Weldox and Hardox shop primers Welding handbook

4 Out of position welding, which means welding in
positions other than the horizontal, is enhanced.

In these situations, there may be a tendency for
insufficient bonding of the molten weld metal to
the joint if the primer is not removed. This can
cause lack of root penetration and lack of fusion
            in the joint.

9.2 Thermal cutting of shop primer
          painted plate

Oxygen fuel cutting and plasma cutting can be
performed without incident on plates with the
shop primer left on. There is no need for special
consideration of the cutting parameters due to the
          primer.

The shop primers applied to the Strenx and
Hardox grades can affect the laser cutting speed.

Further information regarding cutting parameters is
          found in chapter 11.

          9.3 Health aspects

Welding and cutting of primed plates can be
performed in normal ventilated workshop premises.
However, there will be an increase of fumes due to
the primer. Tests have shown that the shop primer
itself does not have additional health risks for the
welder or the operator during these conditions.
