Journey to 2006 Ulysses AGM Event in Ulverstone
Tasmania – Mike Abberfield.
Down memory lane again and this time our trip to the Ulverstone in Tasmania. I was looking
through some old papers and documents recently and came across a travel diary for this trip. We
had planned the trip in the months before we left and most of the accommodation was booked
before we left the mainland. Our travelling companions were Garry and Sue Hughes, I was riding
my first Triumph Sprint, Colleen was riding her 750 Honda Shadow and Garry and Sue were two-
up on a Yamaha V Star.
Day 1 and 2 - Early morning ride from Newcastle to Sydney, at this time ferries were still running
from Sydney to Tasmania and all we had to do was negotiate early morning Sydney traffic at
Darling Harbour. All safely onboard, though Colleen had some second thoughts about riding up
the metal ramps to get to our tie down bays. The bikes were secured and we made our way to our
cabins and departed Sydney at 2.30PM and arrived in Devonport at 12.30 PM the next day. After
alighting from the ferry, we rode to Latrobe for lunch and then onto Launceston via Deloraine.
Our base in Launceston was Llyod’s Hotel.
Day 3 - Early start with a ride down the Tamar
Valley, over Batman Bridge to Georgetown,
then coast road to Bridgetown then returning to
Launceston via Scottsdale
Day 4 - Tour to Westbury, Sheffield, Wilmot,
Ulverstone, Devonport and return to
Launceston.
Day 5 – Early start to leave Launceston, down
the Midland Highway to Campbell Town and
onto Ross. Great early Tasmanian town with the
main attraction a convict-built bridge. Travelled
on the Leake Highway across to the east coast for overnight in Bicheno.
Day 6 – Morning ride from Bicheno to Coles Bay and the Freycinet National Park. Afternoon ride
return to Bicheno and then to St. Helens via Scamander and return to Bicheno to overnight.
Day 7 – Depart Bicheno via Coastal Road to Swansea, Triabunna, Orford, Sorell and final stop
Hobart. Afternoon in Hobart with walk around waterfront and visit to Salamanca Markets.
