insPiring stories from tHe
Pandemic
Nahu Sangad Katuwal
Let’s be honest, the last two years have not been the best. A global pandemic
has shut down the entire world and has kept us at the edge of our seats. Ev-
ery single day, news about the pandemic has shaken all of us to the core. Mil-
lions infected, thousands dead and many more cases to come with the in-
creasing variants. Though the world is in the gutter, millions of people have
their own stories to share about their experiences in this new environment.
1) Newly Wed Doctors Spend Their Honeymoon in the Hospital
Two newlywed doctors had planned to spend their time in Dubai and Maldives
but that was before the pandemic. In the midst of the pandemic, the two love-
birds decided to cancel their lavish getaway and instead, go back into the front-
lines 12 hours after they were married, taking care of covid infected patients.
2) Teens Create a Website to Deliver Groceries to seniors
The Corona Virus is most dangerous to senior citizens. Knowing this and with
extra time in their hands, teens from Santa Barbara created a website called
Zoomers to Boomers where elders living in Santa Barbara can sign up to have
their groceries delivered to them the next day by a high school student. This
helped many citizens to start taking more precautions regarding the elderly.
3) Donating Savings for Covid Preventions
The children in Gujarat donated their piggy bank savings towards the
covid-19 relief funds with the hope of helping the poor and needy people
who have been affected the most during this pandemic. The overall dona-
tion went into helping the migrant workers whose life turned upside down
with the implementation of lockdown. “Everyone should help the gov-
ernment in fighting the coronavirus,” says one of the donating children.
4) First Grader Kindness
Cavanaugh Bell, a seven-year-old from Gaithersburg, Maryland, want-
ed to help local senior citizens in his area. He used $600 of his own mon-
ey that he had saved up from his birthdays and Christmas, to put togeth-
er coronavirus care packs for seniors. The care packs included cereal, tea,
fresh fruit, canned goods, mouthwash, and a bottle of bleach. Cavanaugh
then went door to door delivering the care packages to his elderly neighbors.
5) Women Firefighters on the Frontlines of Resilient Recovery
Costa Rica has been aiming for a more sustainable and resilient recovery after
covid and the “fire brigadistas” will be on the frontlines. They have been gaining
recognition after fighting gender norm stereotypes just as effectively as they fight
forest fires. Women in Costa Rica have always played a vital role in conservation,
but, due to gender stereotypes - as in the case of most countries - there were fac-
tors limiting their roles in bigger projects. However, efforts are underway to ad-
dress these disparities, and better recognize the unique ways that men and wom-
en contribute to efforts related to the environment, forestry, and climate action.
