“Here you are, dear,” Dr. Chester said while handing
Adriana a pair of scissors and guiding her hand while she was
doing so.
Adriana took a deep breath and began cutting the
cord.
“Perfect,” Dr. Chester said as Adriana returned the scis-
sors. “And mother, how are you?” Dr. Chester asked as he
handed the newborn to Emilia.
She looked into her newborn’s new eyes, a new con-
sciousness, perfect and reaching out for her love. In that in-
stant, she knew she would do anything to protect her child,
that her love was as vast as the universe yet solid as a rock.
She was a mother and would always be.
Emilia began to sing, ‘Jesus loves the little children’ in
Spanish, which seemed to calm the baby who stopped cry-
ing. After getting the newborn cleaned up, Nurse Flowers re-
turned the newborn to Emilia.
“Great job. I knew you had it in you,” Mrs. Sanchez said.
“Thank you,” Emilia said as she smiled. “Is he okay?”
Emilia asked as the baby started crying again. “He’s
okay,” Nurse Flowers said.
Emilia began singing ‘Jesus Loves You’ again to Urekay,
this time in English.
Samaria, Katey, Adriana, and Mrs. Sanchez took pic-
tures of Emilia bonding with her new baby. “Wow, that’s a big
baby boy,” Mr. Sanchez said. “Did you get his weight?”
“8 pounds, 6 ounces.” “Wow, you’re kidding.”
“He’s going to be a football player.” “Did you read that
right?”
“I read it right unless the scale is lying,” the nurse said.
Everyone laughed.
