continued to monitor Emilia, first checking her vitals with the
stethoscope and listening to her chest.
Emilia let out mild screams, stopping to draw in rasping
breaths. Nurse Wells moved near Dr. Chester to help steady
Emilia.
“Just continue to breathe, “Mrs. Sanchez said as she
grabbed Emilia’s right hand. Adriana stood at Emilia’s other
side, holding her other hand, and delivering reassurance in
her kindest voice.
“Let’s deliver this baby!” said Dr. Chester. “Emilia, when
I say push, push as hard as you can. On the count of three, I
need you to push as hard as you can. One, two, three!”
Emilia pushed as hard as she could while screaming soft-
ly. “Breath,” Dr. Chester said. “Again, on the count of three.
One, two, three.”
Emilia pushed as hard as she could.
“I see a head,” Dr. Chester said. Continue to breathe,
Emilia. You’re doing a great job.”
Emilia felt the baby crowning, the hot stretching of flesh,
and held her breath. Without any further effort, the baby slid
into the hands of the doctor. There was elation, a boy at last,
and in seconds he was there, nascent eyes opening, mouth
rooting for milk.
“And it’s a big boy,” Dr. Chester said with a smile. Sa-
maria, Adriana, Katie, and Mrs. Sanchez were crying tears of
joy.
Dr. Chester suctioned everything out of the baby boy’s
mouth and gently tapped firmly on the newborn’s buttocks,
who started crying. Everyone was smiling as they continued to
cry tears of joy.
“Adriana, you cut the umbilical cord,” Emilia said softly.
“It would be an honor, Adriana said.
