BREAKING THE CYCLE: HOW MENTORSHIP HELPS YOUNG FATHERS
HEAL THEIR PAST
"So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets." Matthew 7:12
(NIV):
As the Client Service Director at the Belleville Pregnancy and Family Care Centre, I oversee the 24/7 Dad program, a vital
initiative aimed at supporting young fathers who are navigating the complexities of parenthood without the guidance of
positive male role models in their past.
Many of these fathers have faced significant challenges and are now treading the path of fatherhood without a clear
roadmap. The absence of a supportive role model during their formative years can have a profound impact on various
aspects of their development, including behaviour, academic performance, and overall well-being.
They find themselves grappling with managing their behaviour, maintaining their mental health, and juggling the myriad
demands of fatherhood. As they strive to become stable providers and caregivers, they aim to shed past behaviours and set
positive examples for their children.
Despite facing obstacles, I have seen these men go through significant changes by reflecting on themselves, seeking advice,
exploring their values, and putting their families first. Their journey is about humility, resilience, faith, and learning to give
back by helping others in tough situations. By changing their life stories and adopting positive traits, these fathers are not
just going through a process of self-improvement but also laying a foundation for a brighter future for their children. While
the path ahead may be arduous, demanding perseverance and the courage to confront difficult emotions, these dads are
evolving, healing old wounds, and crafting new family legacies.
Programs like our 24/7 Dad initiative play a vital role in providing support and guidance to men navigating such difficulties.
They offer a safe space for men to seek assistance, share their challenges, and acquire valuable skills to enhance their
fathering abilities.
In aiding men to become better parents and improve their mental well-being, programs that provide mentorship, direction,
and educational resources play a pivotal part. They create a safe environment for men to address their issues, learn from
one another's experiences, and gain the confidence to surmount obstacles.
However, apart from these structured programs, what is even more crucial for these fathers is the backing they receive in
their day-to-day relationships within their communities.
The journey of fatherhood may present unexpected challenges, even for those who are well-prepared. Community support
and understanding play a crucial role during these times.
It is precisely those individuals who may seem different from us that require our care and empathy the most.
The saying "there, but for the grace of God, go I," reminds us that situations could easily be different, and we might be the
ones who need help someday. Just like Jesus taught us to love our neighbours as ourselves, let's take the opportunity to
support those in need with the same kindness and empathy we would hope for in return.
Reaching out to someone you know who is going through a tough time can make a big difference. Whether it's a friend,
family member, colleague, or neighbour, offering support, guidance, or a listening ear can really help them.
Your support and encouragement can help people deal with the challenges of parenting and family life more easily and
confidently. By assisting those who are facing difficulties, you help build a support system that promotes care and kindness,
benefiting fathers, families, and communities.
To all the fathers out there facing difficulties, may you find the strength and courage to overcome obstacles, may you
receive the support and encouragement you need, and may you always feel surrounded by love and understanding. Your
dedication and love for your children do not go unnoticed, and on this special day, we send you our heartfelt wishes for a
Happy Father's Day. May you continue to inspire those around you with your courage and your commitment to being the
best Dad you can be.
