15. Spur gears
Specifications:
Metal spur gear, 48 teeth, 64 diametral pitch (DP), 20 mm, 2 mm thick – 1 piece
Plastic spur gear, 100 teeth, 64 diametral pitch (DP), 40 mm, 3 mm thick – 2 pieces
Material Characteristic:
• Teeth mesh perfectly with no abnormal noise or wobbling
• Locked into a train connecting motor and rear roller
• Surface finished with lubricating oil after fabrication
Usage Rational:
The metal gear functions to connect to motor spindle, locked by a key, while the
other two plastic gears are subsequently connected to the roller. The main reason
for choosing both plastic and metal gears is that plastic gears are not strong enough
to drive the motor, while metal gears create lag from the roller to the motor. A
combination of both makes the gear train a complete and functional one. 3 gears are
needed as the direction of the roller spinning is has to be the same with the motor,
so the second gear in between only functions to change the direction of spin. The
diametral pitch, meaning the space between teeth of gears, have to be the same for
them to be able to mesh together.
