spent almost every living moment at the old Scout hut.
Patrol Leaders in those days of freedom and responsibility
could run their individual patrols and make their own decisions.
They all had keys to the headquarters and would be quite
capable of planning and running independent outdoor activities.
(Picture of the original Sea Scout HQ...second shed. The first
which was at right angles has already been demolished ready for
building the new HQ. You can see how flimsy the structure was
becoming, especially when battered regaularly by 50 or so
energetic boys!)
All the adult leaders needed to know was where and when
with sufficient detail to give their overall approval.
The Patrol Leaders Council in effect ran the unit with adult
guidance. The responsibility also covered any damage that might
be done with boisterous games. The old hut was made up of two
ex military ’Nissan’ type wooden buildings set at right angles to
one another and mounted on brick footings, violent boyish
activities, particularly during the dark winter months gradually
began to push the internal walls away from one another.
