MOTOR CARS
Before leaving the nostalgia bit and returning to life I must
mention my father’s passion for cars. This must have influenced
his and my mother’s toe in the water with taxis in the late 1940’s
as the two cars they chose at that time were perhaps two of the
best available in the large Wolseley six cylinder and the Ford
Pilot with its V8 motor.
When they first set up home in Boston they had a Morris 16,
again quite a large saloon car. This ended up deep in one of the
large dykes that bordered all the roads in southern Lincolnshire,
while father was coming to terms with them.
Next, came a Vauxhall Velox, not a popular choice with the
family. This was followed by one of the better motors he chose,
a 1950’s Mk1 Ford Zephyr. This was truly fast for its time with a
powerful straight six engine and bench seat in the front with
column change gears.
It was in this car that father travelled the interminably twisty
route from Skegness to Boston in a little over 25 minutes the day
his father, who was staying with us at the time, suffered a heart
attack. I well remember sitting next to father on that front bench
seat gripping the centre arm rest! No seat belts in those days.
(Vauxhall Wyvern....not a good choice.)
