CHAPTER 6
BIG BONNIE
One of our volunteers at this time was Joe an old
“character” who lived in our village. Admittedly, Joe knew
quite a bit about horses, but Joe also smoked and that
was a difficult thing to live with when working among hay
and straw and other inflammables.
We all loved Big Bonnie, Joe particularly and he
eventually wrote to Whitbreads Brewery asking for any
information they could give us.
I think it was John Lawless who replied and explained
that the horse was actually called “Tide” and when
working he had a partner called “Time”. Our Big Bonnie
had worked all his time at Whitbread's and been retired to
that farm in Sussex not long before Goliath had arrived.
That was very lucky for Goliath as Bonnie became his
“prop”. Whenever Golly felt wobbly which as time passed
became more frequent, then Bonnie would simply stand
alongside and hold him up!
