grass verge to graze for a while, I disconnected the trailer
and drew the lorry on a few yards to give us room to drop
            the tailgate.

It looked very small inside, the roof had a curve and it
was even lower towards the outsides.

We gave the horses a few minutes break and leg stretch
then persuaded them to go into the lorry. They were both
as tired as we were but gave us no trouble.
They were tight packed inside and Goliath's shoulders
were brushing the roof beams. Neither of them could lift
their heads. One distinct advantage was that being side
by side now they held each other upright!

Having fastened the tail door, we reattached the trailer
and driving to the bottom of the service road, turned
carefully and climbed back up to the motorway exit to
await any help that be coming. I took all the wheel nuts
off both the wheel with charred tyre and the wheel in front
so as to be ready to quickly change them over.

This would give us two good tyres on the back axle which
would share the weight of the trailer with the drawbar
attached to the lorry. That way we stood a chance of
getting home with the trailer attached. If no help arrived
we would just have to abandon the trailer and come back
            for it the next day.

A police traffic patrol car did arrive with two constables
who were not used to giving help to stranded
horseboxes. We explained the situation, all about the
horses, even about Goliath being the tallest in the World.
We span a good yarn and eventually the driver dug out
