P. 16

I should have learned from my previous experiences by
now not to undertake long difficult journeys on Saturdays
and certainly on Bank Holiday Saturdays, things always
            went wrong, horribly wrong!

Lorries and cars were speeding past us and rocking the
trailer, it was the M25 after all!
It was inconceivable to think of getting the horses out and
standing them on the road while I changed the wheel.
They would have to stay inside where it was relatively
            safe.

Out came the jack and spare wheel etc. and I began to
try and lift that wheel off the ground. I was using a one
and a half ton bottle jack, it was hard going and before I
even got anywhere near lifting the wheel it blew all the
seals out and leaked all the oil onto the floor.

What to do now, we had AA assistance membership and
I could see one of those emergency telephones some
way on the road ahead. I think if I remember correctly my
helper was called Cathy, she was a clever girl of about
15 or 16 years and she was elected to go and seek help.

It took about an hour and a half to get assistance and it
came in the form of a mechanic with some jacks. He
would not entertain doing the job so close to the traffic
and asked me to drive on until we came to a flyover
bridge where there was more hard shoulder for him to
            work on.
It must have been about 2.30pm by now. We had been
homeward bound for over four hours and still had
