Page 14 - GOLIATH THE TALLEST HORSE IN THE WHOLE WORLD
P. 14

I only thought at the time, it was a good job the trailer
            was big.

The extra horse was to compound the problems we
            encountered getting home.

Loading was the first problem. Goliath was wobbly, he
was distinctly battered with sores all over and a scarred
face. Just in front of his left hand hip was a huge open
wound that appeared to be bottomless.

Goliath's pal was a large white Shire who we were told
was called “Bonnie”. He was an ex Whitbread Horse from
the famous stables in the East end of London. He was
nothing like as tall as Goliath but very stocky and
            certainly heavier.

I decided to put Bonnie in first which we managed with
some treats and closed the first partition. Goliath
managed to climb into the rear of the trailer and due to
his wobbly state I allowed him to lob against the back
            door pillar with his bottom.
They both had long reins securing their head collars and
hay nets to give them something to munch on!

By 10.30 we were on our way again, much more slowly
this time because of our fragile cargo!

It seemed to take for ever to reach the M25 south of
London and then head for the Dartford Tunnel.
Once on the other side of the Thames the road was
better and our average speed could be higher than the
25 to 30 mph we had managed for the first two hours.
            This was our downfall!
