CHAPTER 10
GOLLY PROBLEMS CONTINUE
Goliath's falling down problems continued to become
more frequent and we were concerned that if we had no
notice of these events there could be a chance of him
suffering while being stuck on the floor.
We had very good relations with the local ITV local news
studio and they put out an appeal for us to see if anyone
could think of any way Goliath's falling over could be
signalled to us day or night.
We were lucky when a Lincoln alarm company, part of
the Jackson Shipley group of companies came forward
and offered to install a special alarm, free of charge, that
would fit on a simple horse sweat rug.
The installation engineer explained that the principal was
the same as that used by electricity linesmen who carried
a tilt alarm in case they had accidents while out in remote
places. If they fell for whatever reason the tilt switch in
the unit sent a signal to a base station that set off an
alarm.
We had a “Base station” in one of the feed stores and
Goliath had his tilt switch fitted to his lightweight rug.
It worked marvellously in fact too well sometimes as the
cheeky Shetland ponies took a liking to the shiny switch
unit and from time to time grabbed it from Goliath's coat
and just dropped it on the floor of the large barn where
they were all living.
