Page 39 - GOLIATH THE TALLEST HORSE IN THE WHOLE WORLD
P. 39
After the initial settling down days we were told to
gradually reduce the dose until arriving at a happy
medium.
This ended up at about 175 tablets a day, (humans use
this drug widely but they only need one or two tablets a
day) but Bonnie weighed over one ton.
POWDER
Now the dose was settled at 175 tablets a day we asked
if we could have it in powder form to help administer the
drug without loss. The drug company duly obliged and
we continued the treatment for Big Bonnie for several
years which gave him a much improved quality of life.
It was a stroke that eventually ended Bonnie's life.
I came down at breakfast time one day to find Bonnie
laying on his straw bed with Goliath “looming” over him,
something was wrong.
He told me he got down and could not now get back up.
It was his back end that was not moving, something was
stopping him. I collected Goliath's crane and duly slipped
a sling under his bottom and gently lifted him but his back
legs would not move and he was not happy.
I lowered him down gently and pulled the sling away. As I
was talking to him and trying to give him some
reassurance he gave a shudder and just tumbled over
completely onto his side.
There was no sign of life and Golly was quite upset.
Normally we would have taken other horses away from
the area where one had died but this case was quite
different.
