developed a terrible problem with his breathing. It could
have been from his years working in the heart of London
everyday, but it became so bad he was not able to walk
more than a few yards without becoming totally out of
breath.
Julian was treating him and initially gave him a course of
“ventilin”, the exact same stuff folk use in an inhaler if
they are short of breath. Bonnie though was taking
powder every day and large quantities, it was very very
expensive but he did respond to the treatment.
Julian realised we could not continue to pay hundreds of
pounds a week just on the one horse so he asked the
drug company if they could suggest anything else.
They came up with “prednisalone”, a relatively cheap
drug used for all kinds of ailments. They said it would
work to bring relief to the horse and he should start with
around 375 5milligram tablets daily for the first week to
ten days.
This was incredibly difficult to administer as horses are
not well known for being tidy eaters.
As Bonnie spluthered and wooffled his food the tablets
were spread far and wide for the initial few days until we
got the hang of adding something that stuck to the tablets
and kept them in his mouth.
Julian was astonished with the dose size but the drug
company said it would work and work it did. Within a
short time Bonnie could walk reasonable distances and
he could also get up and down far easier.
