P. 5
John Young and Harry studied this horse for quite a while
and finally decided they would give him a chance. They
took him down to London and introduced him to the
famous Young and Co. Brewery stables.
In those days, the 1980's, there were around 25 to 30
Shire Horses living and working in the stables at the Ram
Brewery.
You may have read something of this in either the
Sammy the Shire Horse stories or even in It's a Rum Life
Book three when our original Shire “Ebony” went to work
at Young's.
Most of the horses were used for regular delivery of the
beer made in that brewery.
On a good day a pair of working horses could deliver
several tons of beer in bottle and barrels.
They had specially built drays that were preloaded and
just awaited their horse power to get under way.
It was a more flexible and economic system than using
motor lorries as there was no “downtime” of the motor
vehicle.
