Page 7 - GOLIATH THE TALLEST HORSE IN THE WHOLE WORLD
P. 7
A pair of horses in fact over a five year period could
outwork a motor lorry for less capital outlay and still have
three years or so working time to spare.
(Horses working on tarmac roads have a limited number
of years to work due to the constant pounding effect on
their legs and feet.)
During the 1970's one particular city in the north of
England actually saved around £10,000 on their rates,
over a period of several years, by using a pair of horses
for jobs around the city instead of using a motor lorry.
Back in the Ram Brewery Stables, it was decided that
Goliath was just not sufficiently fit to cope with the daily
chores of a delivery horse. Instead he was trained to lead
the Young and Co. team of four horses that travelled to
all the large Agricultural Shows and special events
throughout the year, promoting the Ram Brewery.
Harry Ranson managed to disguise Goliath's bony
structure with a fine set of “show harness”.
That together with the best of care that a horse could
wish for did the trick.
The very first time I saw Goliath was at a South of
England Agricultural Society ploughing match in around
the middle of the 1980's. Goliath revelled in these public
appearances, he adored the crowds and loved meeting
people. He was a real “show off” and the crowds loved
him for it.
