CHAPTER 3
GOLLY
Goliath had several good years with the Young and Co.
team and stables, but eventually the time came for him to
retire and he went to a farm at Sheffield Park, East
Sussex in the South of England, this would be in 1990.
The next part of his life is a little sketchy as we came on
the scene after he had experienced a bad accident.
Goliath was by now just over 12 years old and retired
earlier than would have been normal due to his
unfortunate upbringing. Remember his muscles were not
what they should have been, they were underdeveloped
and had a fraction of the strength and endurance they
should have had.
Goliath fell down while on this farm but we were told, to
complicate matters he was inside a stable at the time. He
could not get up and was what is called “cast”. Totally
stuck.
By the time he was back on his feet he was in a bad state
both physically and mentally. We were never sure what
the situation was on this particular farm but we do know
that Young and Co. paid the vets bills for Goliath at this
time.
When Kevin Flynn telephoned us early in 1991, he
explained that we were Goliath's last hope.
