Overhead Cables
Drivers of all Company vehicles must be aware of overhead
cables before entering any site or unclassified roads.
Drivers must also be aware of cables that may be obscured by
trees or bushes.
Contact with overhead power cables could result in death or serious injury under no
circumstances should you attempt to get out of the cab or touch any metal objects in
your cab if cables are touched. If cables are touched attempt to make a phone call
using your mobile telephone and wait for help to arrive.
Also be aware of flash over which is where your vehicle gets within conducting distance
and the electricity can jump across to your vehicle, keep a safe distance of 10 meters
away from overhead power lines.
What to do if you come into contact with an Overhead Power Line (OHPL)
If part of a vehicle or load is in contact with an OHPL, you
should remain in the cab and inform the Distribution Network
Operator (DNO) immediately (If you are unsure of the number
then call the office on your mobile phone).
Warn others to stay away.
Try to drive clear. If this is not possible, and you need to leave
the vehicle to escape fire, JUMP CLEAR – do not dismount
by climbing down the steps.
Never try to disentangle equipment until the owner of the line
has confirmed that it has been de-energised and made safe.
WARNING: Contact with an overhead power line may cause the power to ‘trip out’
temporarily and it may be re-energised automatically, without warning.
Rear view cameras, reversing and turning left alarms
These cameras and alarms are fitted for your safety and protection. They must be
switched on at all times. Any damage or defects with the camera or alarm system must
be reported to your Transport Manager immediately.
All reversing alarms and Cameras are to be working permanently. If your
reversing alarm or camera is not working you must report it immediately to the
Transport Manager and not use your vehicle until either it has been repaired, or
you have permission from a company Director to proceed.
