Operating Plant Safely
Before operating the baler ensure that you have fully read and understood the instruction
manual as this will ensure that you have a full and safe understanding of how the baler
should be operated correctly.
Check the door hinges around the bale exit point to ensure that they are not splitting or
breaking away from the body of the baler.
Ensure all bystanders are kept back at least a 3 metre radius of the machine whilst in
operation or bales being moved.
Carry out a pre start check to ensure that the alarm sounds whilst turning the key.
Press the reset button and the machine can be started.
Only load the baler from the floor area at no point should you get onto the baler whilst it is
running or powered up. (Do not take short cuts)
Only TJ staff to operate and load the baler do not allow our customers to load the baler or
get within 3 metres of the baler whilst it is operating.
When fastening the baler wires ensure you are wearing eye protection in case the wire
should break and a part comes back in your direction.
Only load the baler hopper with the Teletruck on site.
Access and Egress to the baler to be kept clear at all times
When entering or exiting the forklift use the handrails and steps provided ensuring three
points of contact at all times.
At no point should you ever be standing on the baler why it is operating or the power is
switched on and not isolated. These machines do not give second chances. They are exerting
a force of over 70 tons
Remember
Please be aware of the TJ procedure for unblocking our cardboard and paper balers should
they become blocked or unable to discharge the bale under their own power.
If the blockage cannot be cleared or the bale removed using mechanical
means
then the baler should be Isolated and locked off.
Fit the DO NOT OPERATE sign to the baler and notify staff that it’s out of
service at the staff briefing.
Please then call the Operations Manager Jason Strudwick and
explain the problem you are experiencing.
A third-party contractor will then be called to assist the unblocking of the baler.
Do not enter the Baling Chamber under any circumstances.
If you need to visually inspect the loading chamber, this should be done under the instruction
of the site foreman having followed the isolation procedure and using a TJ registered and
inspected ladder or fitted visual aid.
Do not use ladders or steps recovered from the waste at any time.
