3. If in doubt a Supervisor or Manager must be consulted before the lift can take
place.
Manual handling is the term used to describe the lifting, pulling, pushing and carrying of loads
using one or more parts of the body.
Wherever possible, manual-handling operations should be avoided by redesigning work tasks
to remove the need for manual handling. Where this is impracticable, an assessment of the
load, task, individual and environment should be undertaken. If you are unsure how to carry
out any manual handling task then please ask your supervisor/ manager for advice and
instruction.
Below is a procedure to help prevent injuries:
Lifting and carrying
Can lifting or moving the load be avoided? If not:
1. Examine the object
• Check weight, centre of gravity, stability
• Are there any sharp edges?
• Check with your supervisor / manager
2. Plan the task
• Consult your supervisor / manager
• Plan a route free from tripping or slipping hazards
• Provide opportunities for rest and recovery
• Know where to unload
