5.3 Drivers are to observe the following top tips:
Before they travel or operate any plant:
• Prepare themselves
➢ Refresh your knowledge of the plant you are about to operate, including the
Operators Manual, Safe Systems of Work and Risk Assessments.
➢ If they need glasses (or contact lenses) to meet the Highway Code’s minimum vision
standards, they must wear them at all times while driving or operating plant and
equipment.
➢ Set your phone to voicemail and hand in at the office. No phones, MP3 players
etc are allowed on any of our transfer stations unless agreed by the site foreman
or a director.
• Check their vehicle (MIST)
Complete a walk-round check to ensure that:
✓ Mirrors are clean, correctly adjusted and set to minimise blind spots (check blind spots
1m rule)
✓ Indicators are working, clean, and can be seen
✓ Signs and safety systems are working correctly
✓ Technology, including reversing cameras are fitted correctly, working and clean.
While driving plant:
Keep checking for pedestrians who may walk around the site
Check their mirrors and over their shoulders for pedestrians
before they vary their speed or change direction
Keep scanning their mirrors whilst operating the machine to ensure they are
aware of their surroundings
Check and familiarise themselves with their blind spots for forward and reverse
operations
• Leave space
Give pedestrians plenty of space so that they can cross the yard safely and not
feel under pressure
Do not drive or park in pedestrian walkways
