               20.5 Workshop Environmental Issues SSW

Common sense must prevail at all times. If you feel that something at work is dangerous or
could cause a threat to human health or the environment, you must bring it to the attention
                  of your manager.

As a responsible company, we must persist in keeping the working environment as clean
as possible. We also have a requirement by Law not to pollute the environment. To help
combat many common problems, the following procedures need to be followed:-
LITTER – Litter needs to be picked up and returned to the building wherever possible and
placed in a lidded bin. This is a never-ending task, which requires constant monitoring by
                   all operatives and management.
DUST – Dust comes from two areas on site, either from the erosion of concrete in the yard
outside or from abrasive wheels and steel fabrication works. To protect yourself, P3 dust
masks are provided as part of your personal protective equipment and it is strongly
                   recommended that you wear them.
PESTS – Pests are attracted by any accumulation of waste. Site personnel should still
check the whole site for signs of vermin. If you do find any signs of vermin, you must notify
your site manager who will contact a company to come and deal with the pests before they
                   become a problem.

               20.6 Goods In

                   • Anyone delivering goods to the site must first report to reception. They will then be
given a site briefing if required.
                   • When a vehicle enters site to unload material, the load must be visually inspected to
identify the material to be removed a dynamic risk assessment will then be used to
ascertain the safest method of safely unloading.
                   • Paperwork to be checked to ensure the correct material and quantities are being off
                      loaded.

                   • If the materials are damaged then the load should be rejected and the reason for
rejecting the load written on the delivery note. Please take a copy for Harrisons records.
                   • After the points above have been completed, the vehicle must, when safe to do so, be
directed to the correct unloading point. The forklift operator must always be made
aware of any vehicles or pedestrians.
                   • All unloading must be supervised from a safe distance to observe the following :-
