20.7 Segregation of Pedestrians
All visitors, pedestrians, contractors MUST sign in at the site offices/reception area. They will
be met by site foreman/management and if necessary, site inducted and given a copy of the
site rules to read and then sign the visitors book to confirm their understanding.
All visitors, pedestrians, contractors MUST wear correct PPE, steel mid-sole boots, hi- safety
glasses and hearing protection unless agreed with one of the directors.
Before walking near any plant or vehicle, visitors, pedestrians or contractors MUST always
make eye contact with the driver (to make sure he/she has seen you before proceeding).
You should be accompanied by a member of staff.
Verbal contact MUST be made to the forklift or mobile plant so they can account for the
additional persons walking around on site.
All visitors, pedestrians, contractors MUST adhere to the machine operators or member of
staff instructions AT ALL TIMES. This is important because they are the key people to control
the traffic or other plant on site.
Visitors, pedestrians MUST not walk into an area without permission of a member of staff
and be aware of mobile plant at all times.
All contractors working outside their permit of work MUST be escorted unless prior
arrangement has been made with site management.
Visitors, pedestrians MUST keep a minimum distance of 5 metres away from moving plant
at all times.
The mobile plant driver MUST ensure he keeps a minimum of 5 metres away from
pedestrians at all times. If in doubt, he MUST STOP and check where pedestrians are, sound
his horn to make them aware of his presence and signal for them to move away.
The operator MUST be familiar with all the relevant safe systems of work and the relevant
Risk Assessments relating to this machine.
If all the above controls are followed, then the risk of injury to persons has been brought down to
as low as is reasonably practical.
