Do you enjoy reading books like the ones in my
column “Sharon’s Slant”? Do you like to talk
about what you’ve read? If you’ve answered
“yes,” you’ll be glad to know that Janis Kadlec,
Director of Interpretive Programming for the Red
Rock Canyon Interpretive Association, is restart-
ing her book discussion group.
The first gathering will be Saturday, November
16 to discuss Roses of the West: Yesterday’s
Women 1826-1977 by Anna Seagraves. The book
is available for sale in the Elements Gift Shop -
remember your Friends discount! The group will meet quarterly using books from the collection at Elements.
Call 515-5367 to register for the Red Rock Canyon Book Club Meeting—you will get the time and location in-
formation. I’ll be there. Janis and I hope you will be too!
Tort Tattler (continued from page 5)
You may have heard or read that the Desert Tortoise Conserva-
tion Center (DTCC) in Las Vegas is scheduled to lose its fund-
ing next year. The Pet Desert Tortoise Pick-Up Service has been
discontinued and unwanted tortoises must be dropped off at the
Lied Animal Shelter. Currently, the shelter transfers the tortois-
es to the DTCC. Eventually the Lied Animal Shelter hopes to
offer an adoption service.
The tortoises will start brumating in October or November and
will stay in their burrows until the weather warms up in March
or April.
Come on out to
the habitat and
see them soon.
Feeding days
are Wednesday
and Saturday.
