Context that Required Initiation of the Practice:
Analysis of short, silent educational and theme based films and documentaries
The Department of Mind Management and Human Values stems out its expertise in
production of high quality thematic short silent films of high educational, social and
cultural value. Our aim is to create new perspectives on important social issues. We
produce short silent films which are embellished with great values and moral takeaways.
As accepted visual medium is highly effective in creating long standing impressions on the
minds of our youngsters, we use this tool to make learning long lasting.
The electronic medium is usually considered as a distraction; but here, it is used as a
teaching aid. The values that emerge from the film analysis act as correctives to wrong
attitudes and notions. Pseudo-modern concepts held by students are discussed in detail to
help them become modern in the true sense of the term.
The students, picturing themselves as the characters in the scenes, realize they have
committed the same mistakes or are facing similar problems /issues in their everyday life.
They also learn how to correct these mistakes and tackle these problems / issues.
The Actual Practice:
Film analysis is conducted as a group activity involving critical viewing of short films depicting
various situations in life. The students are divided into small groups; 15 minutes are given to
groups to analyze and coordinate their ideas and make a short crisp presentation. The time
frame creates a healthy stress that leads to intense focused thinking, team-spirit and creativity.
The Films have been purposely shot with no dialogues. This compels the students to learn to
observe the characters and their expressions; the music in the background.
