or ten girls, and he wraps it up.
Craig: And he can wrap it up that succinctly, I believe,
because a couple of paragraphs back he said, “You write
me, using the enclosed envelope, that, if and when
I get . . .” You know, he’s telling them to get the envelope
out; get your checkbook out. He’s told them what to do.
He’s already done that. He’s, again, commanding them
what to do, even send it to President Hutchins. Send it
for how much. There was nothing missing in the instruc-
tions. He’s already told them how to relieve the pressure
he has created.
Here he says, “This is a long letter,” implying essen-
tially, “You are still hanging with me here,” so we’re
acknowledging a fact that you’ve just waded through
a lot of paragraphs. But then he immediately says,
“I could be writing . . .”; he could have been doing
something else, too. So, you know your time is valu-
able. His time is valuable, and he’s almost implying that
his time is pretty darn valuable, thank you very much.
Right? And then he doesn’t ask this question, he tells
them, “So, remember that this is different from any other
appeal that ever came to you.”
He doesn’t ask them, “So don’t you think, don’t you
agree?” No, he tells them how it is. When you get to the
final line, he’s been telling them how it is. “What will
you have, ten boys or ten girls?” And if you bought in
so far, you’ve got nowhere else to go.
Joe: Yes.
Craig: And there’s no asking here in terms of—like you
said, there’s no “yes” or “no.” It’s “which,” the assumed
close.
