e. Argumentative Writing
1) Definition
This study concentrates on enhancing students' persuasive writing
skills, particularly in the form of an argumentative essay, as it is
essential for academic success and general life goals (Crowhurst, 1990).
In undergraduate curricula, the argumentative essay is one of the
required genres. As academicians, the undergraduates must be able to
discuss and defend their opinions in writing, whether in a scientific
paper or other formal writings.
Oshima and Hogue (2007) define an argumentative essay as a
type of essay where the authors express their agreement or
disagreement with a particular issue, employing logical reasons to
substantiate their viewpoint. Reinking and von der Osten (2018),
however, highlights the importance of an argumentative text as a well-
reasoned and organized paper that presents evidence to persuade the
reader to accept a claim, take action, or both. According to Hyland
(1990), an argumentative text is a type of text that has a three-stage
structure that reflects the fundamental principles of the genre: Thesis,
argument, and conclusion. Essentially, an argumentative text is a
written piece in which the author takes a stance either in support or
against a particular issue or subject, or presents arguments for both
sides.
