Sloughis are smart, too. Barud and Beldi regularly got a small treat during the walk. Barud
could still sometimes insist that he wanted another treat, which was not always
successful. Then he walked ahead of me, stepped into the plowed field (he knew that was
not allowed, because then I would have lost sight of them in no time). I did not have time
to tell him to stay on 'this side', because at the word 'this' he was already standing next to
me with a head like: “Now I am a very good boy and I deserve a cookie.” .... Well, that was
true. He then continued walking with complete satisfaction, so funny!
During a walk with Zinah, Ferda and Gabr,
Gabr then still a little crumb of 4 months,
we had to cross a wild grid. In that big
park there are also some Highland cattle,
hence the grates. The girls jumped over
them but you can also walk along the side,
over a metal strip. Gabr didn't understand
what was meant and on the leash it didn't
work either. I called Ferda and asked her
to show him. Gabr off leash again and off
to the grid once more. Ferda tripped
forward, looking around to see if Gabr
was coming. Along the side and Gabr
followed without any problem. At the next
grid I wanted to do the same thing again.
Both Ferda and Gabr thought that was
Ghaada and her sister Tifa, playing around as puppies.
They are still doing that four years later! ©Phodograf nonsense, they really knew by now.
What is the nicest thing about the breed? Are there any disadvantages to the breed?
Sloughis are special dogs, you have to be able to deal with their character. They are also
often very subtle in their expression. They are not panting, wagging their tails loudly or
jumping madly. They can do all that but it seems beneath their dignity.
The only real disadvantage I find are those short stick hairs that really get into everything.
But other than that I can't think of any disadvantages. They are great housemates and
travel companions. If you let them get used to many things as a young dog you will enjoy
it a lot later on. They like to go out with their owner but also like to lie on the couch next
to you, nice and warm.
