Meet
Jessica Smith
An interview with this talented 13 year old
junnior handler who also has a love for art.
by Teigan Jones
How long have you been drawing for?
I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember, my
mum has kept nearly all my drawings since I’ve been
able to hold a pencil! I never really put down my pencils
and have experimented with different media, but I only
really started doing realism using coloured pencils in
early 2020.
What do you draw? (animals, flowers etc.) I
I mainly draw dogs, cats and horses but I do
occasionally flowers and really anything that I see
and feel an urge to draw!
What has been your favourite piece to draw?
A beautiful Scottish wild cat.
What has been the most challenging piece to draw?
A drawing of my sister’s Miniature Wire Haired
Dachshund. Not only was the reference photo very low
quality but wire coats are very hard to really capture!
Is there something that you particularly want to draw in
the future that you have not drawn yet?
Drawing a Crufts Best in Show winner is a dream of
mine!
What are your favourite animals to draw?
Dogs, followed closely by equines.
Have you got any tips for people who are considering
-
learning to draw?
Take your time. Don’t put a lot of pressure on your paper, start light and build up
the layers gently! Watch YouTube drawing tutorials. And NEVER compare yourself to
another artist. Art should show your individuality and creativity.
